چکیده

Finite element techniques are often applied to the design and development of golf clubs. While distance and accuracy are the primary design characteristics, the acoustics of the ball/club impact play an important role in player perception. Previous work has applied finite element techniques to predict the sound of a golf ball/club impact. This research helps to lay the foundations for implementing finite element techniques into the process of developing golf clubs which produce a perceived 'desirable' sound upon impact. This study investigates the application of Ansys/LS-Dyna to predict the frequency response of a golf ball impacting three cylindrical titanium plates of varying thickness. A golf ball was fired against each plate at 41 m/s and the sound was recorded using a microphone. Fast Fourier transformations were applied to the sound recordings to obtain the frequency modes. A finite element model was developed for each plate and acoustic simulations for ball/plate impacts were run using the Rayleigh method. Averaged across all three plates, the mean frequencies obtained from the impact simulations for the first two modes were within 3% of those measured experimentally. Further research could work towards applying the techniques presented here to a golf ball/club impact. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Experimental Determination of the Optimum Ball Impacts for Solution of Silo Obstruction (RESEARCH NOTE)

A number of considerations should be taken into account in design stage to avoid the foregoing malfunctions of vertical silos containing ore concentrate. One of the silo problems is obstruction at the outlet which blocks the material flow. There are procedures, depending on the material properties and silo dimensions, to solve this problem. A common way is impacting the silo wall by manual hamm...

Dynamic modelling of hardness changes of aluminium nanostructure during mechanical ball milling process

In this research, the feasibility of using mathematical modelling in the ball milling process has been evaluated to verify the hardness changes of an aluminium nanostructure. Considering the model of normal force displacement (NFD), the radius of elastic-plastic and normal displacement of two balls were computed by applying analytical modelling and coding in MATLAB. Properties of balls and alum...

Modelling and Numerical Simulation of Cutting Stress in End Milling of Titanium Alloy using Carbide Coated Tool

Based on the cutting force theory, the cutting stress in end milling operation was predicted satisfactorily through simulation of using finite element method. The mechanistic force models were introduced in high accuracy force predictions for most applications. The material properties in the simulations were defined based on the cutting force theory, as a function of strain and strain rate wher...

A Computational Wear Model of the Oblique Impact of a Ball on a Flat Plate

Many wearing processes are a result of the oblique impacts. Knowing the effective impact parameters on the wear mechanism would be helpful to have the more reliable designs. The H-DD (Hertz-Di Maio Di Renzo) nonlinear model of impact followed by the time increment procedure is used to simulate the impact process of a ball on a flat plate. Restitution parameters are extracted and compared with t...

A Neurosurgical Golf Injury

Introduction Being one of the few activities that people of all ages and skill level can play, golf has increased in popularity. Consequently golf-related injuries have been notably increasing over the past few years. This particularly occurs in the paediatric age group.1 Head injury in this sport is most likely to be caused by golf clubs, however there have been reported cases in the literatur...
